Story Summary
For the Love of Music began with those words written across the canvas, then evolved into flowing color inspired by how music carries us through life’s challenges. Reflecting on a scene from Mr. Holland’s Opus, this creation honors teachers, students, and the moments when rhythm helps us cross an inner bridge. Let the rainbow-like path remind you that creativity can open stuck places and guide you gently into your next movement with renewed ease inside.
Story
After writing out the words, For The Love of Music, I began painting a music staff across the middle of the piece. I wrapped the bars the whole way across on the the back of the frame so you can still see the remnants of the staff on the back. As I began painting, I ended up with some colors on the canvas. As I was preparing to write up this story about the piece, I reflect on a movie from the 90’s called “Mr Holland’s Opus.” The movie is about a music composer who to make some extra money becomes a music director at a High School. There is a student who is having trouble with playing her clarinet. When she has a private lesson with Mr Holland, he tells her to “play the rainbow” and asks her to close her eyes. With her eyes closed, she visualized the rainbow and got to the part that she was having trouble with and crosses the “bridge” in the music effortlessly. As I look at the piece, there is a lot of rainbow in the piece. The largest colors in the piece Green (at the bottom), Yellow, Red and Blue could also makes up the famous ‘F-A-C-E’ that makes up the spaces in the treble clef bar. As you look at the piece, may it symbolize the bridge in your life that you may be able to visualize your way past. Something else that I did accidentally was using vinegar to clean my brush after painting. I looked the work and realized I still need to paint my signature “J” at the bottom. I painted it and didn’t like how it looked, so I removed it. After I did, what remained was what you now see, it’s more of a watermark “J.” If you have a love of music, I hope you enjoy the rainbow that helps you bridge whatever challenge may be in your path. Visualize the rainbow and allow yourself to transcend it.
